The short answer
Connect the accounts you want to review through Lumen, then ask your compatible AI to compare spending over the same dates. Ask for the categories and transactions driving any difference. Follow up with your own priorities instead of stopping at a chart or a single total.
Before you start
- Include the relevant accounts and specify the date range. An unconnected card will not appear in the answer.
- Compare like with like, such as two complete calendar months, rather than this month so far against a full previous month.
- Say how to handle transfers, credit card repayments, refunds, and business expenses so purchases are not counted twice or mixed unintentionally.
A better spending review in four questions
Start with a fair comparison
Try: “Compare spending for the last two complete calendar months across my connected personal accounts. Exclude transfers and credit card repayments. Tell me which accounts and dates you included.”
Ask what drove the difference
Try: “Which categories explain the change? Show the amount for each month and the difference.” This separates a broad increase from a few specific changes.
Follow the answer to its evidence
Try: “Show me the transactions behind the travel increase. Flag refunds or unclear categories.” Review the details before deciding a pattern is real.
Explore a choice that matters to you
Try: “That trip was a one time expense. Without assuming it repeats, what does the rest of the comparison show?” Or ask what a spending limit you choose would change. The AI can help calculate the scenario; you remain responsible for the decision.
The total is the start of the conversation.
A sample comparison of two complete months
Sample dataYou
Why did my spending go up last month?
Your AI, using Lumen
Across the connected accounts in this example, spending rose from $2,760 to $3,180, an increase of $420. Travel rose $300 and dining rose $160, while subscriptions fell $40. Other categories were unchanged.
You
The travel was a one time trip. What changed without that?
Your AI, using Lumen
Removing the $300 travel increase leaves a $120 increase: $160 more in dining offset by $40 less in subscriptions. That comparison does not assume another trip next month.
You
Show me the dining transactions before I decide what to change.
Your AI, using Lumen
Review the merchants, dates, and amounts behind that category. Check whether any transactions need a different category or were reimbursed. A category total alone cannot tell us which purchases mattered to you.
Scripted example with invented figures. Actual answers depend on your connected data and AI. The useful result is an explanation you can inspect and a choice you can reason about, not a promised saving.
Make the answer worth relying on.
Avoid double counting
A credit card purchase and the later repayment are different records. Ask how transfers and repayments were treated, especially across multiple accounts.
Check coverage and freshness
Available history and updates vary by institution and provider. Ask for the data period and note missing accounts, pending activity, or incomplete results.
Keep the next step realistic
A what if calculation does not enforce a limit at your bank. Lumen’s web budgeting, goals, and business workflows belong to the product roadmap, not a promise that this guide creates them.
A few practical questions
Can I analyze spending across different banks and cards?
Yes, for the accounts you successfully connect and the data those connections make available. Tell your AI which accounts and period to include. Do not assume it can see accounts you have not connected or history the provider does not supply.
Will the AI’s total match my statement?
It may differ if dates, accounts, pending transactions, refunds, or categories differ. Ask for the records and assumptions behind the answer. Use the relevant official statements when you need a statement based reconciliation.
Can I use this for business bookkeeping?
This guide covers personal spending analysis. Lumen for Business is a planned pilot, including preparation and collaboration use cases. A conversational spending breakdown is not a set of reconciled books or a substitute for your bookkeeper’s review.
