The short answer
ChatGPT has its own Finances experience for eligible users. Lumen is a separate route: it connects selected financial accounts through a custom MCP app, so you can use Lumen’s financial context in ChatGPT and other compatible AI apps. Native Finances and custom apps have different availability requirements.
Two routes. Different reasons to choose them.
Start by checking what is already available in your ChatGPT account. A finance feature and permission to install a custom app are separate things.
ChatGPT’s own Finances
OpenAI offers a finance experience with connected accounts, financial questions, and dashboard views for eligible users. It may meet your needs if you want to manage the experience entirely inside ChatGPT.
Lumen as a custom connection
Choose Lumen when you want its financial connection and account controls, including the option to work with other compatible AI apps. This does not make Lumen an OpenAI built or endorsed app.
Before you start
- Check that your ChatGPT account allows custom MCP apps and the required developer mode. Plan, workspace permissions, and interface availability can differ.
- Use ChatGPT on the web for custom app setup. A workspace administrator may need to approve access.
- Have your Lumen account and connection link ready. Your AI subscription and Lumen plan are separate.
Connect Lumen to ChatGPT
Check custom app access first
Review ChatGPT’s current custom app and developer mode requirements before signing up for that purpose. OpenAI’s finance feature being available in your account does not establish that custom MCP apps are available too.
Get your Lumen connection link
Follow Lumen’s guided setup to connect your AI and financial accounts. Returning users can find the link and current ChatGPT walkthrough on the AI connection page.
Create the custom app with OAuth
Enable developer mode where available, then use ChatGPT’s custom app creation option. Name the app Lumen, enter your Lumen server URL, and select OAuth authentication. Complete the setup and sign in to Lumen when prompted. Labels and administrator steps may differ by account, so follow the current walkthrough rather than a screenshot from an older interface.
Ask using the Lumen connection
Select Lumen from the available apps in your conversation and ask a specific question about your connected accounts. If a follow up needs fresh information, make sure Lumen is available for that message too. Start with a question you can check against your accounts.
Give a balance some context.
A personal cash flow conversation using Lumen
Sample dataYou
What’s likely to come out of checking before the weekend?
Your AI, using Lumen
Your current balance is $1,840. Recent payments suggest about $550 in expected expenses, leaving $1,290. Those expenses are estimates from your transaction history, not confirmed future payments.
You
Leave a $400 cushion and $150 for groceries. What’s left?
Your AI, using Lumen
With those assumptions, about $740 remains: $1,840 minus $550 in expected expenses, $400 for the cushion, and $150 for groceries.
You
What if utilities are $40 higher?
Your AI, using Lumen
That would leave about $700 if everything else stayed the same. Setting aside these amounts in this conversation does not transfer or reserve money in your bank.
Scripted example with invented figures. Actual answers depend on your connected data and AI. A follow up can explore a different possibility using context already retrieved. Every question does not require a new bank request.
Make the answer worth relying on.
Keep the connection clear
When comparing answers, check whether ChatGPT used Lumen, its own Finances feature, uploaded files, or information already in the conversation.
Separate estimates from actuals
A recurring payment pattern is not a confirmed bill. Check dates, pending activity, and available history before making a financial decision.
Review both privacy policies
Lumen passes requested financial information to ChatGPT. OpenAI’s data controls and retention policies still apply to the information ChatGPT receives.
A few practical questions
Do I need Lumen if ChatGPT already has Finances?
Not necessarily. Compare your actual account coverage and preferred workflow. Lumen provides a separate financial connection you can use with compatible AI apps, while ChatGPT’s own finance experience is an OpenAI product. Neither option establishes that every bank or account type is supported.
Does a Lumen subscription include a ChatGPT subscription?
No. Lumen and your AI provider are separate services. Check the current custom app requirements for your ChatGPT account and Lumen’s pricing before choosing either paid plan.
Can ChatGPT act on my money through Lumen?
Lumen has no ability to move money, pay bills, or make trades. Approved permissions can allow financial reads and organization such as labels or categories. Those actions do not authorize payments or transfers.
